Victoria Police are partnering with Special Olympics Australia to hit the road to deliver an awareness tour across Victoria’s north east. The Law Enforcement Torch Run Tour is an opportunity to share the Flame of Hope with communities across regional Victoria and promote the importance of inclusion and acceptance for people with an intellectual disability (PWID).
In addition to Torch Runs in 10 towns and ‘Come and Try’ events in 4 regional centres, Special Olympics Australia is offering a FREE training session in Wangaratta and Wodonga to help local clubs help provide better opportunity to deliver sport to PWID.
The session is aimed to be practical with the focus being on providing club coaches and volunteers with the skills and resources to deliver better quality sport for PWID. It will also demonstrate how being an inclusive club is good for business – increasing your membership numbers by being more inclusive and making strong community partnerships.
It was a fun and successful day for all schools and adult teams that participated in the All Abilities Soccer Gala Day on Friday 22nd June at the South Wangaratta Reserve.
The adults competition featured teams from Connect GV, Mitchell Rangers FC, and PALS. Connect GV and Mitchell Rangers FC played out a thrilling final, with Connect GV taking the honours.
The schools competition featured teams from Wangaratta District Specialist School (WDSS), Belvoir Special School, and Cobram Special School. At the end of the competitive but friendly matches, WDSS 1 emerged on top of the table.
Organised by Valley Sport and Sport North East, we could not have had such a great day without invaluable support from:
Wangaratta City Football Club
Murray United Football Club
Atila from Football Federation Victoria
Galen Catholic College
And of course all of the players, teachers, friends and family who travelled to participate. Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved.
